What is turkey neck

Cleveland Clinic describes it as neck skin that appears saggy, similar to the tissue that hangs from a turkey's neck. The platysma is a thin muscle on the front of the neck. StatPearls says it produces the vertical bands seen in an ageing neck when its inner borders separate.

Common causes

• Ageing skin. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) quotes a surgeon saying neck skin has less collagen and elastin than most body areas. StatPearls says it is thinner.
• Muscle and fat. ASPS says the platysma gets bigger with age, deep neck fat pads play a part, and the neck loses support as the face ages.
• Weight loss, genetics, smoking and sun. Cleveland Clinic lists weight loss that leaves loose skin, genetics, smoking and sun exposure.

What the sources say about results and limits

• Botulinum toxin. As of October 2026, the US BOTOX Cosmetic label lists moderate to severe platysma bands. StatPearls describes it for mild banding, with the effect lasting 3 to 4 months. Our sources do not describe it for loose skin. The label warns that toxin effects may spread beyond the injection site.
• Ultrasound devices. In our sources, Ultherapy and Sofwave have FDA clearance to lift lax tissue under the chin and on the neck, and Korean press reports an MFDS neck-wrinkle use for Shurink. In a small, maker-sponsored Ultherapy pilot, 95% of subjects reported improvement at one year, while blinded reviewers rated 6 of 14 evaluable subjects improved. We found no study of Sofwave or Shurink for loose neck skin.
• Neck lift. Cleveland Clinic says the surgery can remove excess fat and sagging skin by tightening the platysma, and that results can last years. ASPS quotes surgeons saying the result may not last unless the platysma is repositioned, because ageing continues.
• Risks of surgery. Cleveland Clinic lists bleeding, bruising, infection, deep vein thrombosis and changes in skin sensation. StatPearls adds hematoma (blood collecting under the skin), nerve injury and a "cobra neck" deformity from removing too much fat.
