Korean term: 팔자주름
What are nasolabial folds
Cleveland Clinic defines nasolabial folds as creases extending from both sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Only you can decide whether to treat them, and it advises consulting a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon if you do. They differ from marionette lines, which run from the mouth corners to the chin.
Common causes
- Ageing. Cleveland Clinic says the cheekbones flatten, gravity pulls on loose skin, and collagen and elastin decline.
- Bone loss. StatPearls says bone loss in the upper jaw deepens the folds.
- Smoking and sun. Cleveland Clinic says smoking destroys collagen and elastin, and sun rays break them down.
- Weight changes. Cleveland Clinic says weight loss can leave looser skin and weight gain can enlarge the cheeks.

- Filler. The FDA says absorbable fillers are approved for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds (adults 22 and older). A meta-analysis of 51 studies with 4,097 patients described improvement as sustainable for up to one year, strongest in the first months and gradually declining. The most common complications were tenderness, lumpiness, swelling and bruising, and pooled estimates put infection and vascular events at about 1% each. The authors rated study quality as low. The FDA names unintended injection into a blood vessel as the most concerning risk.
- Botulinum toxin. Cleveland Clinic says Botox injections can reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds for a few months. As of October 2026, the US BOTOX Cosmetic label lists frown lines, crow's feet, forehead lines and platysma bands, not this area.
- Juvelook. A Korean business-news report (October 2025) describes the Volume line, also sold as Lenisna, as aimed at hollows and nasolabial folds. Studies of its results here are not confirmed in our sources. A 2024 review calls granulomas, firm red nodules at the injection site, a primary concern with this type of injection.
- Face-lift. Cleveland Clinic says a cheek lift or face-lift can reposition skin and underlying tissue. StatPearls says jowls can often be treated by lifting the SMAS (a deeper layer under the skin) alone, but when midface features such as nasolabial folds need rejuvenation, a deep-plane or composite technique may be more appropriate.

- How long should the result last, and when would I repeat it?
- What are the signs of a blocked blood vessel, and whom do I contact if I notice a problem after I leave Korea?

FAQ
What causes nasolabial folds?
Cleveland Clinic names ageing (flattening cheekbones, gravity on loose skin, less collagen and elastin), smoking, sun exposure and weight changes. StatPearls adds bone loss in the upper jaw. The sources do not rank them, so the doctor examines your face to see which apply.
How long does filler last in the nasolabial folds?
Cleveland Clinic says six months to a year. A meta-analysis described improvement as sustainable for up to one year, strongest in the first months. The FDA says the duration depends on the filler material and the area injected, so ask what to expect from the product the clinic will use.
Can Botox treat nasolabial folds?
Cleveland Clinic says Botox injections can reduce their appearance for a few months. The US BOTOX Cosmetic label, as of October 2026, lists other areas, such as frown lines and crow's feet. The doctor decides after an examination whether it suits you.
Can a face-lift remove nasolabial folds?
Cleveland Clinic lists a cheek lift or face-lift as an option. StatPearls says that when nasolabial folds need rejuvenation, a deep-plane or composite technique may be more appropriate than SMAS lifting alone. The surgeon decides which technique to use after an examination.
