Korean term: 칙칙한 피부톤
What are dull and uneven skin
DermNet lists roughness, sallowness (a yellowish tone) and dyspigmentation (uneven pigment) among the features of sun-damaged skin. Cleveland Clinic lists dull complexion, rough skin and uneven coloring among the conditions chemical peels treat. Our sources do not define "dull skin" as a diagnosis or say how common it is.
Common causes
- Sun exposure. DermNet says chronic ultraviolet exposure causes photodamage: roughness, sallowness and uneven pigment.
- Smoking. DermNet says nicotine narrows blood vessels, so less oxygen and fewer nutrients reach skin cells, and other tobacco chemicals break down collagen and elastin.
- Pollution. DermNet links chronic exposure to environmental pollutants to premature skin aging.
- Extra pigment. Cleveland Clinic and the AAD list sun, inflammation after acne or injury, hormones, medicines and irritating products as triggers for darker patches.

- Skin boosters. A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized trials of hyaluronic acid injections found improved skin hydration and radiance, but no significant change in elasticity or melanin (pigment) index. Results differed widely between studies, the authors call for more research, and long-term results were not assessed. "Skin booster" also covers other products, so ask which is used.
- Pico toning. The trials we found are for melasma, a pigment condition. Our sources hold no trial of it for general dullness.
- Microneedling. The AAD lists uneven skin texture and tone among its uses, says results appear gradually over several months, and says they fade as collagen is lost. Our sources do not compare it with Potenza's radiofrequency version.
- Peels and microdermabrasion. Cleveland Clinic says light peels usually need three to five sessions and microdermabrasion one to four a month. It says darker skin tones face a higher risk of darkening after a peel.
- Sun protection. DermNet says protection from solar UV is essential at all ages.

Questions to ask the clinic
- What is behind my dull or uneven look: sun damage, pigment, roughness or something else?
- Which product or device will be used, and what does the quote cover (cc, shots, passes)?
- How many sessions and how far apart? How long should the result last?
- What downtime and side effects should I expect for my skin tone?
- What happens if the result is not as planned? Is the written quote with VAT?
FAQ
Why does my skin look dull?
Our sources do not define dull skin. DermNet links roughness, sallowness and uneven pigment to sun damage, and says smoking narrows blood vessels and reduces the oxygen and nutrients reaching skin cells. A doctor can check for pigment conditions such as melasma or sun spots.
Do skin boosters make skin brighter?
A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized trials found hyaluronic acid injections improved skin hydration and radiance, with no significant change in elasticity or melanin index. The authors say more research is needed. "Skin booster" covers several products, so ask which one the clinic uses.
Can pico toning even out skin tone?
Pico toning is used for pigment such as melasma. A Korean trial found a 1064 nm picosecond laser similar to conventional laser toning for melasma, not better. Our sources hold no trial for general dullness. A doctor decides after an examination whether pigment is the cause.
Do chemical peels help dull skin?
Cleveland Clinic lists dull, rough skin and uneven tone among the conditions peels treat, and says light peels usually need three to five sessions. Darker skin tones have a higher risk of darkening after a peel. A doctor chooses the peel depth for your skin.
