Receded chin in Korea: causes, treatments and published prices

A receded chin, also called a weak or recessed chin, is a chin that does not project far enough to match the forehead, nose and other features. The sources describe hyaluronic acid filler for milder cases, and chin implants or bone-moving surgery for larger changes. The doctor decides after an examination.

Korean term: 무턱

What is a receded chin

Cleveland Clinic gives the same definition of a recessed chin. MedlinePlus says chin surgery is mostly done to balance the face by making the chin bigger compared with the nose.

Related terms: MedlinePlus uses microgenia for a small or receding chin. Cleveland Clinic separates micrognathia, a small chin, from retrognathia, an average-sized chin on a jaw set back from its usual position. A review grades microgenia as mild, moderate or severe by how far the chin lies behind a reference line.

Common causes

  • Jaw position (retrognathia). Cleveland Clinic says some people are born with it, while others develop it after injury or childhood habits such as thumb sucking.
  • Conditions present from birth. Cleveland Clinic lists hemifacial microsomia and Nager, Pierre Robin and Treacher Collins syndromes.
  • Chin bone size. The causes of a small chin bone are not confirmed in our sources.

What the sources say about results and limits

  • Filler. Cleveland Clinic says hyaluronic acid is commonly used to augment the chin and that results last six months or longer. The FDA warns that injection into a blood vessel can cause tissue death or vision loss.
  • Chin implant. MedlinePlus describes an implant placed in a pocket in front of the chin bone, with the final look taking three to four months. Cleveland Clinic lists bleeding, infection, nerve injury, bone erosion and a shifted implant as risks.
  • Bone-moving surgery. Genioplasty cuts the chin bone and fixes it in a new position. A 2025 review of seven studies (1,126 patients, mostly retrospective, short follow-up) says bone surgery suits severe or asymmetric cases. Satisfaction was high with both methods, infection was reported more often with implants, and numbness persisted in 7.4% to 12.5% after bone surgery.
  • Bite and jaw. MedlinePlus describes suitable candidates as people with a normal bite. Cleveland Clinic says retrognathia can affect chewing and sleep, and that braces or jaw surgery may be used.

Questions to ask the clinic

  • Is my chin small, or is my jaw set back, and do I need a bite or jaw examination first?
  • Which option suits my degree of recession: filler, an implant or bone surgery, and why?
  • For filler, which product and how many syringes, and how would you respond to a blocked blood vessel? For surgery, which method or material, and what recovery time should I plan in Korea?
  • If the result is not as planned, is a revision included, and can an implant be removed?
  • Does the written quote include VAT, anaesthesia and follow-up visits?

FAQ

What is the difference between a receded chin and a small chin?

Cleveland Clinic says retrognathia, a receding chin, means an average-sized chin on a jaw set back from its usual position, while micrognathia means a small chin. MedlinePlus uses microgenia for small or receding chins. A doctor examines the face and bite to see which applies.

Can filler correct a receded chin?

Cleveland Clinic lists the chin among areas where hyaluronic acid is used and says filler effects are temporary. A 2025 review says fillers and fat grafting suit mild volume deficiency, while implants suit mild to moderate deficiency and bone surgery suits severe cases.

How do an implant and bone surgery differ?

An implant is placed in a pocket in front of the chin bone. Genioplasty cuts the chin bone and repositions it. The 2025 review links implants to more infection and bone surgery to more numbness, and says bone surgery suits severe or asymmetric cases.

When should I see a doctor about my chin or jaw?

Cleveland Clinic advises contacting a provider about breathing problems, difficulty eating, jaw pain or popping, or disturbed sleep, which it lists among the effects of retrognathia. It names braces for mild cases in children and teens and jaw surgery for severe cases in fully grown jaws.
