Exosome skin treatments in Korea: regulatory status and how clinics price them

Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by cells that carry signals between cells. In Korea, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) said in 2022 that the exosome products sold to clinics are cosmetics, and that cosmetics cannot be used by injection. As of an October 2025 report, no exosome medicine for humans has been approved in Korea. Korean clinics usually price exosome items per session, per cc or per vial.

What are exosome skin treatments

Exosomes are tiny membrane-bound vesicles that cells release. They carry signals between cells. In aesthetics they are mostly applied on the skin after microneedling. One study found that exosomes plus microneedling gave better skin quality than microneedling alone. Most research on exosomes for aesthetic use is still preclinical, which means lab and animal studies.

"Exosome" is a name for a kind of ingredient, not one product. A 2024 review notes that products differ by source. ExoCoBio, a Korean company, markets ASCE+ products derived from mesenchymal (stem) cells in South Korea. The ASCE Plus line registered in Brazil is plant-derived (Rosa damascena). Ask a clinic what its exosome product is made from.

Regulatory status in Korea

This section is about how Korean regulators have described exosome products. It is not about whether a particular clinic follows the rules.

  • At the National Assembly audit in October 2022, the MFDS commissioner said exosome products are sold as cosmetics. The commissioner also stated that cosmetics cannot be used by injection and promised a fact-finding review.
  • Korean press found the exosome ingredient in clinic "skin boosters" licensed as a cosmetic.
  • In December 2022 the Ministry of Health and Welfare moved to stop clinics from injecting cosmetics, such as exosome products, with syringes.
  • As of October 2025, a trade-press report said no exosome (extracellular-vesicle) medicine for humans has been approved in Korea. The MFDS's National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation issued a guideline for evaluating extracellular-vesicle therapeutics at the end of 2023. The current position may have changed, so check with the MFDS.
  • A price list does not show whether a product is applied on the skin or injected. Ask the clinic.

Regulatory status in the United States

The FDA's public safety notification of 6 December 2019 says there are no FDA-approved exosome products. The FDA regulates exosomes used to treat human diseases as drugs and biological products that need premarket review and approval. A 2023 review found no exosome-based product approved by the FDA, although some manufacturers reported an approval "status pending".

How clinics in Korea price exosome treatments

These patterns are common in the prices that clinics in this directory publish:

  • By amount. The usual item is a number of cc or a vial per session. Amounts differ a lot, so compare the same amount and the same product.
  • By product. Clinics name the product, such as ASCE+ or a house brand. Products differ by source, so a price for one is not a price for another.
  • As an add-on. Some clinics list an exosome item together with another treatment, such as RF microneedling, another RF treatment or microneedling. A bundle price is not comparable to an exosome-only price.
  • Other uses. Some clinics list scalp exosome care. Some list multi-service stem-cell packages. These are not comparable to a single skin item.
  • Packages and events. Some clinics sell a package of several sessions, and event prices are common. Check the end date.
  • VAT usually excluded. "부가세 별도" (bugase byeoldo) means VAT is charged on top of the listed price. Most clinics list it this way, but not all.

Downtime and aftercare

We could not confirm downtime for exosome skin treatments. No approved label exists, and we found no maker or journal source that states it. We also found no source that states a standard number of sessions or an interval.

In 2022 Korean press reported complaints of inflammation and scarring after skin boosters registered as cosmetics were injected. Your doctor gives aftercare instructions and explains the risks after examining you.

Questions to ask the clinic

  • What is the product's name and maker, and what is it made from: stem cells, plant cells or something else?
  • Is it applied on the skin, for example after microneedling, or injected?
  • What regulatory category does the product have in Korea: cosmetic, medical device or drug? Ask to see the box or label.
  • How many cc or vials are in the price?
  • What else is in the price: microneedling, RF or other treatments?
  • What are the risks, and what happens if I have a reaction?
  • Is VAT included (부가세 별도 means it is not), and is this a regular or an event price?

FAQ

What are exosome skin treatments?

Exosomes are tiny membrane-bound vesicles that cells release to carry signals to other cells. In skin treatments they are mostly applied on the skin after microneedling. One study found better skin quality than with microneedling alone, but most aesthetic research is still preclinical. Exosome products differ by source, such as stem cells or plants.

What is the regulatory status of exosome treatments in Korea?

In October 2022 the MFDS commissioner said exosome products sold to clinics are cosmetics and that cosmetics cannot be used by injection. In December 2022 the Ministry of Health and Welfare moved to stop injecting such products. A trade report says no exosome medicine for humans was approved as of October 2025. Check the MFDS for the current position.

Are exosome treatments FDA approved?

No. The FDA's public safety notification of December 2019 says there are no FDA-approved exosome products. The FDA regulates exosomes used to treat human diseases as drugs and biological products that need premarket review and approval. A 2023 review found none approved, even where manufacturers reported an approval status of pending.

Do exosome skin treatments work?

Most research on exosomes for aesthetic use is still preclinical, meaning lab and animal studies. One study found that exosomes plus microneedling gave better skin quality than microneedling alone. We found no label or journal source giving a standard result, number of sessions or downtime. Your doctor can explain what to expect.

How much do exosome treatments cost in Korea?

Korean clinics usually price exosome items per session by the amount in cc or by the vial, and the price depends on the product. Some list an exosome add-on to another treatment, such as RF microneedling, and some sell packages. VAT is often listed separately. The table shows each clinic's published price with the VAT basis and the check date.
